Frequently Asked Questions :


How can I help?

Our greatest need is for volunteers who can drive and/or deliver meals between the hours of 11:15am and 1:15pm, Monday through Friday. We also need volunteers to pack the meals by route from 9:30 to 11:00am Monday through Friday.

How much time will it take?

We ask our volunteers to share one day per week, spending about 1 ½ to 2 hours. We have some volunteers who come more often or who fill in on an as need basis.

What sort of commitment is necessary?

Come and find out if we are a good fit for your desire and time to volunteer. Once you decide, we would ask for at least a once a week, six month commitment, if possible. We do have volunteers who are available only once or twice a month and others who are substitutes who are contacted on an as need basis. Some volunteers are only available during summer months. We are grateful for any time you can donate.

Is there an age limitation?

Drivers must be 18 years of age. There are some opportunities for community service for middle and high school students with the approval of the Program Coordinator.

Are you open for Holidays?

No, we are closed on major holidays.

How do I sign up to be a volunteer?

Where are you located?

Meals are assembled and picked up at 54 N. Oakland Avenue in Pasadena, 91101 between Colorado Blvd. and Union. Assembly occurs in the basement of the building and the cars are loaded in the parking lot.

What tools will I be given to work with?

Each driver is provided a route book with detailed directions and client information for each location. We also provide the necessary equipment to transport the meals safely and efficiently. The equipment and route book must be returned to Pasadena Meals on Wheels immediately at the end of the delivery route.

Does Meals on Wheels provide insurance coverage?

No. Each driver must have a valid driver’s license and must carry his or her own auto liability insurance and sign a liability waiver. A copy of current California Driver’s License and Auto Insurance must be kept on file at Pasadena Meals on Wheels.

Does Meals on Wheels reimburse for gasoline?

No. Each driver donates the use and expense of their automobile, however, these expenses are deductible according to IRS guidelines.

Will I be assigned a regular day and/or route?

Yes. You let us know your availability and whether you want to be a packer, driver or deliverer and we will assign you to a regular day and/or route. Some of our volunteers like to do both the packing and delivery on the same day. Some of our volunteers are available and willing to be called if needed to fill in on additional days.

What If I can’t make my volunteer commitment on my regularly scheduled day?

We request that you notify us as soon as possible so that we have time to make arrangements for someone to replace you.

If you are a packer, you will tell the Program Coordinator or leave a message at 626 449-6815.

If you are a driver or deliverer, you will contact the person who is the day captain for your delivery day. If you can’t get in contact with them, you must call the Program Coordinator.

What if I encounter a difficulty or an emergency while delivering on a route?

Call the office and the Program Coordinator will help you decide the best course of action. Volunteers are provided a guideline concerning situations that may arise while out on delivery.
