ABOUT US

Pasadena Meals on Wheels is a non-profit community service staffed by volunteers. We are dedicated to helping the disabled, aged, ill or convalescing by supplying them with delicious wholesome meals at an affordable cost. Our service assures friendly interest and most importantly helps our clients to remain self-sufficient in their own home.

Pasadena Meals on Wheels was started in May 1964. From an initial seven clients, it has expanded to serving approximately 100 clients today.

Preparation of all food delivered is centered at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church. This facility is provided by the Church to our organization at a nominal cost as a community service.

Business aspects are handled by a volunteer Board of Trustees. The paid staff consists of a cook and a coordinator. It is our volunteers who make the wheels turn. They package and deliver meals five days a week, Monday through Friday with holidays excepted. Deliveries are made mid-day and consist of a hot meal and a cold sack meal with milk or juice.

The charge for meals is affordable. Private contributions from individuals and grants from foundations and corporations assist in subsidizing the cost. We receive no government assistance. Because we are a 501 (c) (3), all donations are tax deductible.

Meals on Wheels programs make fiscal sense. Investment in senior nutrition programs like Meals on Wheels saves federal and state tax dollars by keeping seniors out of nursing homes and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and readmissions. The service is much more than a meal. Each friendly visit also serves as a safety check that give seniors and their loved ones the peace of mind they need.

Meals on Wheels organizations operate in virtually every community in America through independently run local programs. Each committed to supporting their senior neighbors to live healthier and more nourished lives in their own homes.

Meals on Wheels originated in England during World War II when the Women’s Volunteer Services for Civil Defense was organized to provide meals for the many people who lost their homes during the Blitz. The first successful program in the United States began in Philadelphia in 1954.
